The Moja Expressway Company has advised motorists to use faster payment methods to improve traffic flow on the Nairobi Expressway. Delays at toll stations have been exacerbated by ongoing rains and increased vehicle volumes during peak hours. The company promotes registration for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) to allow non-stop passage.
On Friday, March 6, 2026, the Moja Expressway Company issued an advisory encouraging drivers to register for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC), which enables automated billing and non-stop travel through dedicated lanes. This measure aims to address persistent delays at toll stations amid rising congestion. The notice states, “To ensure a seamless travel experience and improve traffic efficiency on the Nairobi Expressway, we encourage all customers to register for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) to enjoy the convenience of non-stop passage and automated billing.”
Motorists are also urged to opt for digital payment options, such as mobile money services or the Manual Toll Collection (MTC) card, to speed up transactions at booths and reduce waiting times. For those preferring cash, the company recommends carrying the exact toll amount to avoid delays in receiving change, thereby facilitating quicker movement for vehicles in line.
The advisory arrives as traffic volumes on the expressway have increased, particularly during peak commuting periods. These issues have been aggravated by heavy rains affecting Nairobi and other parts of the country. In a prior notice dated February 21, the company highlighted safety precautions for rainy conditions, stressing the need for vehicles to have adequate tire tread depth and proper inflation for better grip on wet roads. Drivers were advised to reduce speed to allow sufficient reaction time to hazards like sudden splashes or obstacles.
