Nile pact countries affirm firm stance on river water rights

Ethiopia's Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos met with counterparts from Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement signatory countries in Addis Ababa. The ministers discussed full implementation of the agreement and swift establishment of the Nile Basin Commission. They affirmed their firm stance on legal and historical collective water use rights on the Nile River.

On February 13, 2018 (Fana), in Addis Ababa, Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos (Dr.) met with foreign ministers from countries that signed the Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement. The meeting included ministers from Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan.

During the discussions, the ministers focused on the full implementation of the Nile Basin Cooperative Framework Agreement and the possibility of swiftly establishing the Nile Basin Commission. They affirmed their firm stance on the legal and historical collective water use rights on the Nile River.

Additionally, the member countries emphasized that the agreement will greatly contribute to ensuring their legal and historical water shares in the river. This meeting aims to strengthen cooperation among the participating Nile Basin countries and protect water benefits.
