Police in South Africa's North West province have arrested a suspect in the stabbing death of Matlosana Municipality councillor Sello Molefi outside a tavern in Klerksdorp. The 46-year-old was killed during an argument over a girlfriend, according to investigators. The 35-year-old suspect is set to appear in court on a murder charge.
On February 13, 2026, police responded to reports of an incident outside a tavern in Klerksdorp's Central Business District. They discovered the body of 46-year-old councillor Sello Molefi on the ground, suffering from a stab wound to the neck. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate the stabbing occurred amid an argument linked to a dispute over a girlfriend. A 35-year-old man handed himself in to authorities and was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on February 16, 2026.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Dr Ryno Naidoo praised the swift action by officers. North West police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh stated: “Emergency medical personnel were summoned and subsequently certified the victim dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was allegedly stabbed during an argument reportedly linked to a dispute over a girlfriend.”
The South African Local Government Association (Salga) in the North West condemned the killing as a brutal attack on democracy. Provincial chairperson Khumalo Molefe said: “Those responsible for this ruthless act must face the full might of the law. Justice must be served to restore public confidence and to safeguard the integrity of our democratic institutions. Furthermore as Salga we urge the relevant authorities to intensify visible policing particularly within central business districts which has become crime havens that threatens safety of the community members.”
