Santa Monica Studio announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy during a PlayStation State of Play event, with the project in early development. Alongside this, a new 2D action platformer titled God of War: Sons of Sparta was surprise-released on PS5, focusing on Kratos' youth. The prequel, developed with Mega Cat Studios, is available now for $29.99.
The announcements came at the end of a PlayStation State of Play broadcast on February 12, 2026, marking developments in the God of War series 20 years after its debut on PlayStation 2.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is a canon prequel set during Kratos' brutal training at the Spartan Agoge alongside his brother Deimos. The game features the brothers overcoming threats while confronting the meaning of duty and honor. Players control Kratos as he battles beasts from Greek mythology using a sword and shield, acquiring Gifts of Olympus to unlock abilities. It adopts a retro pixel art style reminiscent of Sega Genesis-era action platformers. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio, the title launched immediately on PS5. The Standard Edition costs $29.99 USD / €29.99 / £24.99 / ¥3480, while the Digital Deluxe Edition is $39.99 USD / €39.99 / £32.99 / ¥4480, both available digitally via the PlayStation Store.
Separately, Santa Monica Studio revealed a full remake of the original trilogy: God of War (2005, PS2), God of War II (2007, PS2), and God of War III (2010, PS3). The project is in early stages, with no gameplay footage shown. Original Kratos voice actor TC Carson confirmed his return, stating, “This project is still in the early stages. Next time we come back, we’re coming with something big.” A PlayStation blog post noted, “As we look to the future, we also want to invest in the past and tend to the series’ roots that got us to where we are today. We know that remaking the Greek saga has been a frequent request – the genuine, passionate interest from fans to see the original games return is something we’re very thankful for and can’t wait to share more when the time comes!” Further updates on the remake are not expected soon.
