Dusty Baker revisits historic Dodgertown after 30 years

Dusty Baker, the 76-year-old manager of Nicaragua's World Baseball Classic team, returned to Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, for the first time in three decades. The visit stirred memories of his eight springs as a Dodgers player from 1976 to 1983. Now known as the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, the site has been refurbished by MLB to promote baseball development.

On Monday, Dusty Baker toured the former Dodgers Spring Training facility, now the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, with Del Matthews, MLB's senior vice president of baseball development and Baker's godson. Wearing a Nicaraguan uniform reminiscent of the Dodgers, Baker rode a golf cart through Holman Stadium and the back fields, marveling at the upgrades.

"It’s unbelievable, the improvements," Baker said. "From the lunch room, to the stadium, to everything. Seeing the pictures on the wall reminds me what it was like to have [Roy] Campanella in camp and [Carl] Erskine, Tommy Davis … Sandy Koufax. We had some bad dudes instructing us and teaching us how to play."

Founded in 1948 by Branch Rickey, Dodgertown was a 220-acre integrated haven where players of all races trained together, the year after Jackie Robinson broke MLB's color barrier. Baker, a 19-year MLB veteran who later managed over 2,000 wins including a 2022 World Series with Houston, spent formative years there. The Dodgers left for Arizona after 2008, and MLB acquired the site in 2019, renaming it to honor Robinson's legacy in baseball and civil rights.

Today, it hosts amateur events like the Hank Aaron Invitational, Breakthrough Series, Trailblazer Series, RBI World Series, and Andre Dawson Classic, emphasizing diversity and opportunities for underserved communities, particularly African Americans.

Baker shared vivid recollections, including a conversation with Sandy Koufax in the bullpen: "He said hitting and pitching are mirror images of each other. I use that today." He pointed to photos of Robinson in a conference room, noting he has similar images at home, though he never met Robinson. Baker knows the Robinson family and was close to Hank Aaron, who was mentored by Robinson.

Other memories included a nighttime talk on hitting with Sadaharu Oh by the pool, where the moon's reflection evoked a clear-minded pitch, and a prank on manager Tommy Lasorda by teammates Jay Johnstone and Jerry Reuss. "He was cussing … and they were dying laughing," Baker chuckled.

Reflecting on the visit, Baker said, "I kind of lived my life through this. This was some of the best days of my career, some of the best days of my life. Growing up a Dodger fan, I dreamed of being a Dodger. … You have to seize every day because this is evidence how fast things can go by."
