High Court orders IG Kanja to oversee Gatoto School handover by August 13

The Milimani High Court has directed Inspector General Douglas Kanja to ensure the handover of Gatoto Community-Based Primary School to its petitioners by August 13. Justice Gregory Mutai also ordered Kanja and Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat to provide security during the transfer. The ruling came after Kanja appeared in court on July 24 to explain delays in complying with earlier orders.

Justice Mutai stated that ownership and management of the school must be restored to the petitioners on August 13. He required Kanja and Lagat to personally ensure adequate protection for the petitioners and maintain security afterward.

The judge rejected Kanja's request for more time to assess the security situation. Kanja told the court he only learned of the dispute after being summoned on July 23 and that it fell under the sub-county police commander.

The court scheduled a mention for August 18 to confirm compliance, with Lagat ordered to appear. The timeline accounts for the end of the school term to avoid disrupting learners. The dispute follows June 25 directives to register the school as a private non-profit APBET institution and return ownership by July 2.
