Penn State's track and field team delivered strong performances across multiple events at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge held at their home facility. Athletes set personal bests and school records, securing several top finishes. The meet highlighted the Nittany Lions' depth and talent on both the track and field.
The Sykes & Sabock Challenge kicked off on Saturday morning with impressive throws in the field events. Junior Gabrielle Deglau opened the women's weight throw with a personal-best mark of 17.86 meters, earning third place. In the men's weight throw, senior Sam Engebretson surpassed 20 meters for the first time, throwing 20.28 meters to take second. Engebretson later added a fourth-place finish in the shot put with 17.12 meters.
On the track, sophomore Addyson White qualified for the finals in the women's 60 meters with a 7.62-second run, then improved to a personal best of 7.52 seconds for second in the final. Sophomore Ajani Dwyer set a school record in the men's 60 meters prelims at 6.52 seconds, while Scotty Coffi placed fourth at 6.79 seconds.
Distance events saw junior Jake Borgesi run a season-best 4:09.76 in the men's mile for second, with Jacob Smith close behind at a personal-best 4:10.71. Senior Tristan McGarrah tied the second-best mark in Penn State history in the pole vault with 5.20 meters. Sophomore Jake Palermo won the 400 meters in 46.39 seconds, his second victory of the year.
Senior Handal Roban broke a school record in the 600 meters with 1:14.89, followed by Jackson Smith's personal best of 1:19.32. Lea Hatcher claimed victory in the women's 800 meters at a personal-best 2:09.13. The men's 800 meters featured strong showings from Niko Schultz (1:46.67, second, personal best), Yukichi Ishii (1:46.73, third), and Kaleb Nastari (1:47.19, fifth, personal best).
Senior Allison Dougherty finished fourth in the women's 3000 meters with 9:47.24, while freshman Tyler Rader took third in the men's event at a personal-best 8:21.03. The women's 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Addyson White, Maddie Pitts, Boh Ritchie, and Hayley Kitching, won with a season-best 3:37.67. In high jump, freshman Trip Campbell cleared 2.11 meters for first in the men's competition, and Gwen Cudmore tied her personal best of 1.75 meters for third in the women's.
Junior Joe White marked his second 6.99-meter long jump of the year for second place, and sophomore Amelia McBain achieved a personal best of 3.90 meters in the women's pole vault for fourth. Mason Bucks rounded out the men's pole vault in fifth at 4.75 meters.
Looking ahead, the Nittany Lions will compete in three meets on Friday: the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, the Husky Classic in Washington, and the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas.
