Mexican deputy Sergio Mayer requested a leave of absence to participate in the sixth season of Telemundo's La Casa de los Famosos, describing it as a social experiment highlighting values like respect and inclusion. The decision drew reactions from political figures including Ricardo Monreal and President Claudia Sheinbaum. Mayer, a previous participant, aims to promote Latin culture in the United States.
Sergio Mayer, a deputy for Morena, temporarily left his seat in the Chamber of Deputies to join as a surprise inhabitant in La Casa de los Famosos 6, which premiered on February 17, 2026. In a video posted on his Instagram account, Mayer justified his decision: “It’s a great social experiment where participants interact in complex situations, without communication and in total isolation, pushing respect, tolerance, and inclusion to the limit.” He added that these formats 'bare the mind and soul' to reveal principles, ethics, and morals of the participants.
Mayer, a finalist in the first Mexican edition of the reality show in 2023, accepted the invitation to send a message about the importance of Latin culture in the United States, citing Bad Bunny's halftime show at the Super Bowl as an example. He even suggested using similar dynamics to select public office candidates, allowing a better understanding of their true personalities.
The decision prompted political reactions. Ricardo Monreal, Morena's coordinator in the Chamber, called it logical: “It was the most logical thing; the alternative of staying as a deputy would not have been convenient. I told him ‘you’re right to separate’.” President Claudia Sheinbaum, during her February 19 conference, was brief: “It’s a matter for Morena in any case, but there are substitutes.”
Under Article 62 of the Mexican Constitution, upon requesting leave, Mayer ceases his functions, and his substitute, Luis Morales Flores, will take over. Even on leave, he remains a legislator, as noted by Chamber President Kenia López Rabadán.
In the reality show, Mayer is already involved in strategies; the first nomination took place on February 19 at 6:00 p.m. Central Mexico time, with Jailyne Ojeda as leader nominating Kenny Rodríguez.
