Tennessee woman charged with attempted murder after shooting at ex-boyfriend's girlfriend

A 20-year-old woman in Memphis, Tennessee, faces charges of attempted murder after allegedly vandalizing and shooting at her ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend. The incident unfolded on February 18 in the South Memphis neighborhood. Police say the attack stemmed from jealousy over the ex-boyfriend's new relationship.

On February 18, around 6 a.m., police in Memphis responded to reports of a shooting on Driver Street in the South Memphis area. According to a police report, the victims—a man and his new girlfriend—were at the man's home when they heard banging on the windows and front door. The girlfriend reported hearing a woman yelling at the man for having another woman inside the house.

The yelling ceased, followed by the sound of breaking glass. The girlfriend went outside and saw Ateariny Boyd, 20, striking the windshield of her Volkswagen Jetta with a large piece of metal. Police said the four tires on the vehicle had been slashed and flattened. Despite the damage, the girlfriend managed to drive away in the Jetta, but Boyd allegedly followed in a Nissan.

During the pursuit, Boyd pulled alongside the Jetta, rolled down her window, and fired several shots, striking the rear of the vehicle. The girlfriend then climbed from the driver's seat to the passenger side and exited the car just before it collided with a wooden pole near the corner of Driver Street and Richmond Avenue. Authorities estimated the damage to the Jetta at around $2,500.

The ex-boyfriend told investigators that he heard a gunshot and went outside to find the crashed Jetta. He attempted to leave in his own vehicle but saw Boyd exit her Nissan, fire two more shots, and then flee. Police recovered two bullet casings in front of the man's home, and the ex-boyfriend later identified Boyd in a lineup.

Boyd was arrested on Wednesday and is being held in Shelby County Jail on a $310,000 bond. She faces two counts each of first-degree attempted murder and employing a firearm during a dangerous felony, along with vandalism charges for damage between $2,500 and $10,000, and violating bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 13.
