The US Army has reintroduced restrictions on generative AI tools after soldiers rapidly depleted their token allowances. The move comes shortly after the Department of Defense highlighted widespread AI adoption across its workforce.
Members of the Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command received an email stating that the unlimited token policy announced in May 2026 had been exhausted by mid-June. The message noted that the Army CIO pool was depleted and limits had to be re-established, though current usage levels would be renewed temporarily.
The Army relies on the Ask Sage platform, which supports models from Alphabet, Meta and OpenAI. Employees had been allocated at least 200,000 tokens per month under an annual enterprise subscription of 100 million tokens. An Army employee said the service burned through a full year’s supply in weeks.
The Department of Defense continues to promote AI tools despite the setback. It remains unclear whether the token pool will be renewed after 1 October.
