All polled Japanese developers now use generative AI

A new industry survey shows that every Japanese online game developer polled is currently using generative AI tools. The findings come from the 2026 edition of the JOGA Online Game Market Research Report.

The report indicates full adoption among developers. Google's Gemini leads in popularity at 94 percent usage, followed by Anthropic's Claude at 84 percent and Microsoft's GitHub Copilot at 76 percent. The most common applications involve user preference analysis and user behavior prediction.

Players expressed concerns about copyright infringement and the risk of games becoming too similar. This marks an increase from the 2025 Tokyo Game Show survey, which found 50 percent adoption among a broader group of developers.

Companies such as Capcom have noted a certain degree of effectiveness from the technology while keeping creative decisions in human hands. Sony has expressed a similar view in investor materials. The tools in use remain general-purpose programs rather than specialized asset generators.

Generation Z expresses the lowest optimism about AI's future among age groups, even as a majority relies on the technology daily. Only 18 percent of Gen Z feel hopeful about AI, with nearly half believing its risks outweigh benefits. Yet 56 percent report using AI in their lives.
