Aston Villa secured a 1-0 victory over Brighton at Villa Park on Wednesday evening, thanks to a late own goal that boosted their Champions League hopes. The win establishes a six-point cushion over fifth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League standings. Leon Bailey highlighted the importance of the result after two prior home defeats.
The match at Villa Park kicked off at 7:30pm UK time, with Aston Villa starting in third place and aiming to maintain their push for Champions League qualification. Unai Emery's side made two changes to their lineup: Lamare Bogarde replaced the injured Matty Cash at right-back, and Ian Maatsen came in for Lucas Digne at left-back. The starting XI was Martinez, Bogarde, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen; Onana, Luiz, Sancho, Buendia, Rogers, Watkins. The game was tight with few clear chances. Brighton's best opportunity came from a long-range strike tipped onto the bar by Emiliano Martinez. The deadlock broke in the 86th minute when Tyrone Mings headed Leon Bailey’s cross, which deflected off Jack Hinshelwood and was recorded as an own goal. Brighton pushed late, but Ross Barkley’s stoppage-time effort went wide.
Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey, whose corner contributed to the goal, told TNT Sports: "It's massive. The Premier League is crazy, you never know what can take place. If we had won the last two home games, we'd be in a great position. The Champions League positions is where we want to be." Manager Unai Emery added: "We needed to win. We needed to recover confidence through the result... We [reached] 50 points, and it is fantastic."
The victory ends a run of two home defeats following eight straight wins and helps Villa consolidate third place, six points clear of Chelsea. Last season, Villa missed Champions League football on the final day but reached the quarter-finals of the competition.
