Austin Smotherman enters the final round of the Cognizant Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, tied for the lead with Shane Lowry after 54 holes. This marks his first 54-hole lead or co-lead in 82 PGA Tour starts, surpassing his previous best of sixth at the 2023 Mexico Open at Vidanta. Smotherman opened with a 62 and leads the field with 19 birdies through three rounds, ranking top-10 in strokes gained off-the-tee (fifth), tee-to-green (fourth), approach (third), and putting (eighth).
The 31-year-old from Loomis, California, returned to the PGA Tour this season after finishing third on the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, securing his card with wins at the 2021 Simmons Bank Open, the 2025 BMW Charity Pro-Am, and the 2025 Memorial Health Championship. His 2026 campaign includes a T-8 at The American Express but missed cuts in his other three starts. In 2022, he missed the FedExCup Playoffs by one stroke at the Wyndham Championship; he ended 2023 at No. 121 and 2024 at 189th, leading to a Korn Ferry return.
Smotherman grew up playing at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento and was childhood friends with Bryson DeChambeau, beating him by one stroke in the 2011 California State Junior Amateur before joining him at Southern Methodist University. A self-taught golfer, he started with plastic Snoopy irons and had fewer than 10 lessons by high school. He is a martial arts fan, influenced by Bruce Lee films and his uncle's black belt training.
Off the course, Smotherman and wife Jessie are parents to daughters Adeline and Penelope, with baby No. 3 due March 23. Jessie announced the pregnancy 14 weeks ago on Instagram, sharing their infertility struggles: “Experiencing infertility is lonely, frustrating and unfair... You are seen, loved, and this is not your end.” Smotherman noted the timing challenge, with the due date on Monday of the Texas Children’s Houston Open: “There’s so many what-if scenarios... I’m hoping the baby doesn’t come PLAYERS week.” He described his game as “boring and simple,” focusing on fairways after a solo week of preparation.
Their pets include a Mini Australian Shepherd named Cypress after Cypress Point Club and a cat named Pebbles after Pebble Beach.
