David Hockney, the Bradford-born painter known for his vibrant depictions of California life, has died aged 88.
Hockney rose to prominence in the 1960s with his first solo show in London in 1963. He later moved to Los Angeles in 1964, where he created iconic works including "A Bigger Splash".
The artist maintained ties to Britain throughout his career and received the Order of Merit in 2012. His painting "Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)" sold for $90.3 million in 2018, setting a record for a living artist at the time.
A major exhibition of nearly 400 works opened in spring 2025 at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Nearly a million visitors attended the show.
