Ex-officials in La Serena sentenced to 8 years in prison for $762 million fraud

The Tribunal Oral en lo Penal de La Serena sentenced two former officials of the Corporación Municipal Gabriel González Videla on Saturday for defrauding more than $762 million from the treasury.

The main convicts, the former coordinator and former secretary of the Health Department, each received eight years of effective prison for fraud against the treasury and money laundering. The husband of one of them was sentenced to seven years for the same crimes.

The court established that between 2019 and 2025 the defendants diverted $762.778.091 through improper payments to people who provided no services. Confiscation of assets acquired with those funds and fines equivalent to half the damage were ordered.

Ten other defendants received sentences between 840 and 1,082 days in prison with conditional remission. Magistrate Francisca Muñoz explained that only the officials were convicted of treasury fraud because the corporation administers public resources.
