Grian Chatten covers Massive Attack song for Peaky Blinders movie

Grian Chatten of Fontaines D.C. has recorded a cover of Massive Attack's 'Angel' for the soundtrack of the upcoming Peaky Blinders film. The project features contributions from artists including Nick Cave and Amy Taylor of Amyl and The Sniffers. Cillian Murphy, who reprises his role as Tommy Shelby, expressed enthusiasm about Chatten's involvement.

The soundtrack for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, a feature-length spinoff of the crime series, includes Grian Chatten's cover of Massive Attack's 'Angel'. Another Massive Attack track, 'Teardrop', is covered by Irish singer Girl In The Year Above. The album also features an original song from Amyl and The Sniffers' Amy Taylor, a newly recorded version of Nick Cave's 'Red Right Hand', and a collaboration between Chatten and Lankum on 'Hunting The Wren'.

The lead single, 'Puppet', written by Chatten with composers Antony Genn and Martin Slattery, was released recently. The soundtrack comprises 36 tracks and will be released via Milan Records on March 20, coinciding with the film's Netflix debut. The movie premieres in theaters in early March—reported as March 3 by some sources and March 6 by others—before streaming on Netflix on March 20.

Set in 1940 amid World War II, the film follows crime boss Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, as he confronts personal and professional challenges. Returning cast members include Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, and Barry Keoghan, alongside Rebecca Ferguson. The original Peaky Blinders series concluded in 2022.

During a BBC Radio 1 appearance, Murphy described himself as a 'massive fan' of Fontaines D.C., stating, 'There’s certain music that just lends itself to Peaky Blinders … the Fontaines music seems to work, it has that outlaw quality, that dangerous quality …. they’re incredible songs, so it just clicked for us.' He added that he is 'just a groupie' and thrilled about Chatten joining the project's musical lineup. Chatten noted that Murphy had attended a couple of their shows previously. Chatten joked about his preparation for 'Puppet,' saying he 'locked myself in a cupboard for six weeks, didn’t speak to anyone, and it was very difficult not to shave my head in the Peaky style.'

Fontaines D.C. released their album Romance in 2024. This marks Chatten's second new song in recent weeks, following 'Flag' on February 12 with Damon Albarn and Kae Tempest for a War Child benefit compilation.
