Danish design brand Hay has collaborated with British designer Jasper Morrison to release a new collection of 35 outdoor products, including folding furniture and stainless steel accessories. The Hay Outdoor Market by Jasper Morrison Shop draws inspiration from everyday camping and picnic needs, featuring nautical striped textiles and utilitarian designs. The collection launched this week at the MoMA Design Store in New York City.
Hay, founded by Mette and Rolf Hay, has a history of working with Jasper Morrison on items like a wall clock and tabletop timepiece. Rumors of this outdoor project surfaced during a visit to Copenhagen last fall. The collaboration began with a small tin barbecue stove, leading to discussions on products for picnics and camping, as Rolf Hay explained: “I think that’s a good way to work, because you have a greater chance for making something which is relevant.”
The resulting Hay Outdoor Market by Jasper Morrison Shop includes stainless steel dining and cooking implements, such as a fish-shaped BBQ, fish rack, and toaster pan that creates polka dot bread. Portable furniture features light beech wood and folding designs, including lounge chairs and a striped sofa that stores in a large tote. Soft goods like wool throws and insulated bottle carriers incorporate red, blue, and white nautical stripes inspired by patterns from Majorca, the Pyrenees, and a Southern European antique market. Morrison highlighted his affinity for stainless steel: “you can make it thinner and it ends up being lighter. Plus, it’s not fussy.” He added, “The last thing you want is a super colorful thing to eat off with a weird handle.”
Morrison described the collection as forming “an image of outdoor life,” emphasizing folding items and material economy. To Dezeen, he noted the natural fit: “From the beginning, the idea was that we would build the collection in the same way that we stocked the shop – so looking for things that are useful, characterful and affordable.” Though neither is an avid outdoorsman, the products suit general park use, influenced by the pandemic-era surge in outdoor activities.
Priced from $12 for the toaster pan to $595 for the pop-up canopy, the items are available at the MoMA Design Store in Soho, New York, and online at store.moma.org. Morrison's designs are part of the Museum of Modern Art's collection, where Hay debuted in the US in 2015. Both parties expressed interest in future outdoor projects, with Morrison musing, “Why not do a frying pan?”
