Young jockey Diego Herrera, fresh off his first Grade 1 victory, is moving from California to Gulfstream Park in South Florida to pursue more riding opportunities. The 21-year-old rider, who has notched 257 wins since 2021, cited the vibrant atmosphere at the track as a key factor in his decision. He plans to arrive around March 19 and is eager for new experiences.
Diego Herrera, a 21-year-old jockey born in Inglewood, California, has spent his life immersed in horse racing. He began riding ponies at age six, transitioned to quarter horses around 12, and obtained his license at 15. His career has seen steady progress, including victories in the 2025 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (G3) aboard Unrivaled Time and the 2024 Autumn Miss Stakes (G3) on Watchtower.
Recently, Herrera achieved a milestone by winning the Santa Anita Handicap (G1) on British Isles this past Saturday, which he described as “the big daddy.” This marked his first Grade 1 triumph. Earlier in January, he rode the same horse in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park, an experience that influenced his relocation.
“I’m trying to seek more opportunities to ride and get more experience,” Herrera explained. He noted that racing in California can sometimes feature smaller fields and lighter schedules. “I went to Gulfstream to ride British Isles in the Pegasus, and I liked the atmosphere, I liked Gulfstream, and I spoke to Kevin and it seemed like something I’d like to try.”
Herrera will now be represented by agent Kevin Meyocks and base himself in South Florida. “I love the sport. I’m due to get in around March 19 and we’ll see what happens. I’m really looking forward to it,” he added.
This move comes after Herrera's strong start to the year, building on his total of 257 races won since 2021.
