Jalisco authorities suspended classes and mass events on Sunday, February 22, 2026, following a federal operation in Tapalpa where Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho', leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), was killed. A federal operation in the municipality of Tapalpa, Jalisco, resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias 'El Mencho', leader of the CJNG, as confirmed by the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA). The operation involved military intelligence and bilateral cooperation with the United States, which offered up to 15 million dollars for information on him. During the confrontation, four more CJNG members died, three were seriously injured, and three soldiers were hospitalized.

Among the affected events, the Liga BBVA MX Femenil rescheduled the National Classic between Guadalajara and América, set for 5:00 p.m. at Estadio Akron in Zapopan. The Jalisco Charros Baseball Club postponed its game against El Águila Softbol at Estadio Panamericano. In the cultural sphere, Kali Uchis's concert at Auditorio Telmex was canceled, with automatic refunds for online tickets. Teatro Diana suspended its event 'as a preventive measure, prioritizing safety,' and Jalisco's Secretariat of Culture closed museums, exhibitions, and theaters, rescheduling the Orquesta Filarmónica's concert at Teatro Degollado.
The U.S. Department of State advised its citizens in Jalisco and other states to seek shelter. Authorities urged the population to stay home and follow official instructions.
