Nakamura headlines first Naroditsky Memorial rapid and blitz tournament

Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura will top the field at the inaugural Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz, set for July 3-5 at the Charlotte Marriott City Center in Charlotte, United States. The event honors the late GM Daniel Naroditsky, who passed away in October, and features a guaranteed $50,000 prize fund. It combines elite competition with creators to celebrate his influence on chess.

The Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz aims to perpetuate the legacy of GM Daniel Naroditsky, a world-class speed chess player and respected voice in the chess community. The three-day festival brings together top professionals, streamers, and the broader chess audience.

Nakamura enters as the favorite, facing strong competition from grandmasters including Wesley So, Hans Niemann, Nihal Sarin, Oleksandr Bortnyk, Leinier Dominguez, Javokhir Sindarov, Awonder Liang, Sam Shankland, and Aravindh Chithambaram. The tournament also includes a Creator Invitational Blitz with participants such as IM Levy Rozman, Andrea Botez, WFM Alexandra Botez, WGM Dina Belenkaya, IM Eric Rosen, GM Aman Hambleton, IM Sagar Shah, IM Julien Song, IM John Bartholomew, and IM Danny Rensch.

The schedule features four main events: a Rapid Championship on Friday with 7 rounds in Masters and Challengers sections; a Blitz Championship on Saturday with 11 rounds in similar sections; the Creator Invitational Blitz; and a Blitz Final on Sunday for the top 10 Masters players. Limited to 300 participants, the event is open to professionals and amateurs alike.

Organized by the Naroditsky Memorial Fellowship Fund, which has raised more than $1 million, the tournament supports the Naroditsky Fellowship scholarship program for young players. FM Peter Giannatos, Founding Executive Director of the Charlotte Chess Center, stated: "As a close friend of Danya, I am honored to lead the Naroditsky Memorial Rapid and Blitz event and the Memorial Fund. Our mission is to ensure Danya's positive influence on the game continues through the next generation of players."

Giannatos added: "I am incredibly grateful to the players and creators for their participation, and to all the sponsors and supporters for their vital contributions. We are committed to doing this right, and I hope we make him proud."
