The Pokémon Company revealed Pokémon Winds and Waves, the next mainline entries in the series, during a special Pokémon Presents livestream on the franchise's 30th anniversary. These Generation 10 games will launch exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, featuring an open-world region of islands and oceans. The announcement introduced three new starter Pokémon: Browt, Gecqua, and Pombon.
The Pokémon Company marked the 30th anniversary of the original Pokémon games with a Pokémon Presents livestream on February 27, 2026, unveiling Pokémon Winds and Waves as the first mainline titles developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. Set for release in 2027, the games are positioned as Generation 10 and build on the open-world format introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which launched four years earlier on the original Switch.
The new region spans multiple islands separated by vast oceans, evoking elements from the third-generation games Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, originally released in Japan in 2002. Players will explore volcanic crags, murky swamplands, and underwater areas, encountering both new and returning Pokémon. The trailer showcased familiar creatures like Pikachu in beachwear, Oddish, Tympole, Wailord, Tropius, Frillish, Slugma, Carnivine, and Lumineon, many adapted to the island and aquatic themes.
As per tradition, three starter Pokémon were introduced: Browt, a grass-type chickadee with a bulbous head; Gecqua, a water-type quadrupedal gecko; and Pombon, a fire-type orange puppy with an oversized mane. The Pokémon account on X described the adventure: “you’ll travel across beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves that ebb and flow. You’ll also team up with Pokémon to overcome challenges and even the forces of nature!” The games will support 11 languages, including Brazilian Portuguese.
While Pokémon Scarlet and Violet faced criticism for performance issues and bugs on the original Switch hardware, Winds and Waves is expected to benefit from the more powerful Switch 2. The announcement came amid other franchise updates, but focused attention on this watery new chapter.
