Puebla detains auxiliary president for journalist homicide

The Fiscalía General del Estado de Puebla arrested Javier ‘N’, auxiliary president of San Lucas Atoyatenco, on July 18 for the presumed murder of journalist Josué Martínez Contreras that occurred on July 16.

The arrest took place during an operation near a convenience store in San Martín Texmelucan. According to the Fiscalía statement, the detainee offered a vehicle, the endorsement of the invoice and cash to the agents to avoid arrest, which led to an additional charge of bribery.

Relatives and friends of the detainee protested in front of the Municipal Presidency of San Martín Texmelucan. They claimed the detention was illegal because the agents lacked an arrest warrant and only searched the vehicle in which he was traveling with his family.

Journalist Josué Martínez Contreras, a teacher, was murdered on July 16. The detention occurred almost simultaneously with his funeral, attended by family members, colleagues and citizens who demanded justice.
