A rare 1972 Gilbern Invader Mk II, one of just 603 produced by the Welsh manufacturer, is set to be auctioned. Built with a 3.0-liter Ford Essex V6 engine, the car features a restored condition after a decade-long project. The auction is scheduled with Historics Auctioneers on March 7.
The Gilbern Invader represents the final and most refined model from Gilbern, a small Welsh automaker founded in 1959 by Giles Smith and Bernard Friese. Operating from Llantwit Fardre near Pontypridd, the company specialized in glassfiber-bodied GT cars using mass-market components, sold either fully built or in kit form to appeal to enthusiasts.
Introduced in July 1969 as a successor to the Genie, the Invader featured a strengthened square-section steel chassis, improved braking, and higher-spec front suspension from MGC parts. Powered by a 2,994cc Ford Essex V6, it delivered strong low- and mid-range performance ideal for touring. The model evolved through iterations: the Mk I in 1969, Mk II in October 1971 with reclining seats and chassis stiffening, and Mk III in 1972 with body restyling, Ford Cortina suspension, and a wider track.
An unusual Estate variant debuted in 1970, with production estimates between 68 and 110 units. Total Invader output reached 603 before Gilbern halted operations in April 1973, impacted by UK Value Added Tax changes that eliminated kit car tax advantages.
This specific 1972 Mk II, finished in white with a white and red interior and walnut trim, shows 52,069 miles. Originally supplied as components and assembled by its first owner, it remained with them for decades until the late 2000s. A subsequent owner undertook a ground-up restoration over nearly ten years, costing over £14,000, including a rebuilt V6 tuned higher, Weber carburetor, overhauled overdrive gearbox, new clutch, upgraded cooling, and refreshed fuel and exhaust systems. The interior received leather retrim, and wheels were refinished with Michelin tires. Completed in 2018, it has seen limited use since.
The car, accompanied by original paperwork and UK registration, will auction at Historics Auctioneers on March 7 with an estimate of £10,000 to £14,000.
