Major League Baseball plans to expand its Spring Breakout event into single-elimination tournaments starting in 2027, one for each spring training league. The change aims to heighten competition among top prospects in Florida and Arizona. This year's event is scheduled for March 19-22 in a mostly single-game format.
Major League Baseball introduced Spring Breakout in 2024 as a prospect showcase during spring training in the Grapefruit League in Florida and the Cactus League in Arizona. The event quickly gained popularity among fans and team executives for featuring future stars together on the field.
Starting in 2027, Spring Breakout will evolve into two single-elimination tournaments, with champions crowned in each league under a win-or-go-home structure. The format will debut then to avoid overlap with the World Baseball Classic. Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. stated: “Spring Breakout has provided invaluable exposure to the future stars of our game and given our fans a preview of all the exciting talent that is flowing into our sport. With more meaningful games, the Spring Breakout Tournament will take this event to the next level and create a unique experience for our fans ahead of Opening Day.”
The event has already highlighted talent, including three of the past four Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year winners: Paul Skenes of the Pirates, Nick Kurtz of the Athletics, and Drake Baldwin of the Braves. In total, 210 participants from the first two years have reached Major League Baseball, such as All-Star James Wood of the Nationals, Gold Glove winner Masyn Winn of the Cardinals, and Brewers star Jackson Chourio.
Prospects expressed enthusiasm for the tournament. Tigers outfielder Max Clark, ranked No. 10 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, said: “I love [the tournament idea]... It’s only giving you more chances to put focus on Minor League prospects. I think it brings in an extra percent in terms of competitiveness.” Nationals prospect Eli Willits, the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s Draft, added: “Being able to compete against the best talent in baseball, to do it for one game is a blessing, but to do it for a whole tournament would be great as a player.”
Phillies general manager Preston Mattingly noted: “The tournament is a really fun wrinkle: You’re playing for something. I think players will react to that, and fans will as well.”
The 2026 Spring Breakout is set for March 19-22, with games broadcast on MLB Network, regional sports networks, and MLB digital platforms. Expected participants include Pirates infielder Konnor Griffin (No. 1 prospect), Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle (No. 2), Athletics infielder Leo De Vries, and Cardinals infielder J.J. Wetherholt. Rosters will be revealed on March 5 on MLB Network.
