Amazon Prime Video has revealed the first official image from its upcoming live-action God of War TV series, featuring Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. Production on the series, based on the 2018 video game, has begun in Vancouver. The show follows the father-son duo on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye while confronting Norse gods.

The God of War TV series, adapted from PlayStation's popular video game franchise, centers on the story introduced in the 2018 installment. In this narrative, Kratos and his son Atreus embark on an adventure to fulfill Faye's dying wish by spreading her ashes at the highest peak in the nine realms. Along the way, Kratos aims to teach Atreus to be a better god, while Atreus seeks to help his father become a better human. The series draws from the Norse mythology-themed games, where the duo battles gods including Odin, Thor, and Baldur.

The first-look image depicts an early scene from the 2018 game, showing Kratos and Atreus during a hunting moment shortly after Faye's funeral rites. Ryan Hurst, known for roles in Sons of Anarchy, portrays the burly Spartan warrior Kratos, while 11-year-old Callum Vinson plays Atreus. The production team has aimed for visual fidelity to the game's character designs, though some observers note that the live-action proportions differ from the game's stylized look.

Production started ahead of the planned March 2026 schedule and is taking place in Vancouver. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is helming the first two episodes. The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer under his Tall Ship Productions. The series has a two-season order from Amazon MGM Studios and is co-produced with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions. A premiere date on Prime Video is expected in 2027, though not yet confirmed.

An official post from the production shared the image with the caption: "Father and Son. Behold your first look at Kratos and Atreus in the God of War series now in production. Their journey to the highest peak begins."
