Austin police release videos detailing mass shooting sequence, reveal suspect's background

In an update to the March 1 mass shooting outside a West Sixth Street bar that killed three victims and suspect Ndiaga Diagne, Austin police released surveillance, body cam, and 911 audio footage Thursday. Authorities detailed 19 total victims and noted FBI scrutiny of terrorism links amid U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis held a Thursday news conference providing new details on the weekend shooting near West Sixth Street, where 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne killed three victims before being fatally shot by officers. This follows Monday's initial briefing, which reported two deaths and 14 injuries at the time.

Videos shown depicted Diagne driving by a crowd outside the bar in a black SUV, firing shots, then parking and continuing on foot with an AR-15. Bystanders directed officers to his position as he fired at them; three officers returned fire.

Footage included surveillance, body cameras, two 911 calls, and dispatch audio. Diagne wore a hoodie saying 'Property of Allah' over an Iranian flag shirt.

The FBI is investigating terrorism ties, linked to recent U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Diagne's social media showed antisemitic, anti-Christian, and pro-Iranian posts. He had prior mental health issues, including a suicidal episode in Texas, immigrated from Senegal in 2000, and became a U.S. citizen in 2013. Earlier reports noted a 2016 New York pedestrian crash involving him.

Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal, carried out a shooting in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, killing two people and injuring 14 others. Authorities are investigating potential terrorism ties due to items found with the suspect, including an Iranian flag and a Quran.
