Jasmine Paolini of Italy takes the top seed at the WTA 500 Merida Open Akron 2026 after accepting a wildcard entry. The tournament at Yucatan Country Club in Merida, Mexico, features defending champion Emma Navarro as the No. 2 seed seeking to rebound from a slow start to the season. Key first-round matchups include Britain's Katie Boulter against Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The Merida Open Akron 2026, a WTA 500 event, begins next week at the Yucatan Country Club in Merida, Mexico, following the Middle East swing of the tour. Italy's Jasmine Paolini, ranked World No. 8, headlines the draw as the top seed on a wildcard she accepted recently. Paolini aims to rebuild confidence after losing her last three main-draw matches and exiting in the third round at the Australian Open. She receives a first-round bye and will face the winner of Sloane Stephens versus Renata Zarazua in the round of 16. Stephens, the 2017 U.S. Open champion, announced her separation from husband Jozy Altidore on social media, stating, “Jozy and I have decided to end our marriage,” and adding, “With peace, I am navigating this transition with mutual respect and kindly ask for privacy during this time.”
In Paolini's quarter, she could meet the winner of Katie Boulter and Beatriz Haddad Maia, who face off in the first round. Boulter enters on a wildcard, while Haddad Maia is the Brazilian left-hander. The section also includes Indonesia's No. 8 seed Janice Tjen potentially facing Colombia's Camila Osorio.
The other half features America's Emma Navarro, the defending champion and No. 2 seed, who has endured six losses in her first 10 matches of 2026 and sits at No. 19 in the rankings. Navarro gets a bye and opens against a qualifier in the second round. Colombia's Emiliana Arango, last year's finalist, starts against Anastasia Potapova, with a possible second-round clash against Czech No. 4 seed Marie Bouzkova.
Other seeds include No. 3 Ann Li of the USA and No. 4 Bouzkova, both with byes, while No. 5 Dayana Yastremska, No. 6 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, No. 7 Magda Linette, and Tjen play first-round matches. Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez, who won the event in 2024 as a WTA 250 and announced a withdrawal earlier this week, reversed course and appears in the draw against a qualifier. Britain's Heather Watson advanced in qualifying with a 6-4, 6-4 win over France's Diane Parry and faces Bulgaria's Lia Karatancheva next for a main-draw spot.
The tournament runs alongside the WTA 250 ATX Open in Austin, Texas, ahead of the WTA 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami.
