Ubisoft weighs in on PlayStation ending disc support

Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot addressed Sony's plan to phase out PlayStation discs by 2028 during the company's latest earnings call. He noted both advantages and drawbacks but predicted limited industry disruption.

Guillemot said the shift to digital-only sales on PC had helped expand the market. He added that removing physical media would ease pressure on hardware costs and make consoles more affordable.

The executive acknowledged trade-offs but concluded the change would not disturb the industry too much. Sony's move aims to retain more revenue by avoiding cuts to retailers and platform holders.

Ubisoft reported quarterly earnings down nearly 10 percent year over year amid restructuring. Its remake Assassin's Creed Black Flag: Resynced has sold over 3.5 million copies and exceeded full-year targets.
