Assam's Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel stated that the final voter list, published on Tuesday, shows a net decrease of 2.43 lakh voters from the draft, aligning with house-to-house surveys by Booth Level Officers. Over 10 lakh names were deleted amid contentious claims and objections, including bulk filings dismissed as invalid. The process, a modified revision due to the unresolved National Register of Citizens, drew political controversy.
The Special Revision of Assam's electoral rolls concluded with the publication of the final list on Tuesday, resulting in the deletion of 10.63 lakh entries. According to data from the Chief Electoral Officer's office, this net decrease of 2.43 lakh voters from the December draft list followed the acceptance of 5.86 lakh Form 6 applications for new inclusions out of 7.6 lakh received.
Form 7 applications for deletions, totaling 12.97 lakh, saw 10.63 lakh accepted, 1.9 lakh rejected, and 43,536 pending. These deletions included cases of deaths, shifts in residence, and transfers between polling stations. CEO Anurag Goel noted that many bulk and false third-party objections were dismissed after verification, as applicants were often unaware of complaints against their EPIC numbers. He emphasized that the final figures align with findings from Booth Level Officers' house-to-house surveys, which identified 4.78 lakh deaths, 5.23 lakh shifted voters, 53,619 duplicates, 6.27 lakh eligible exclusions, and 1.46 lakh potential voters.
Additionally, 15.36 lakh Form 8 applications for corrections were received, with 13.46 lakh accepted. The revision, announced in November 2025 as a modified annual process due to the incomplete National Register of Citizens exercise, involved rigorous house-to-house visits. It became contentious during the claims and objections phase, with voters receiving notices for hearings on objections claiming they were dead, absent, or had shifted.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that BJP workers, on his directions, filed objections to target 'Miyas'—a pejorative term for Bengali-origin Muslims—leading to lakhs of deletions. Goel did not enumerate dismissed applications but confirmed invalid ones were not counted.
