Bomb threat suspends in-person classes at UABC Mexicali

A bomb threat spread on social media halted in-person classes at the Mexicali campus of Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC). The university activated safety protocols and coordinated with state authorities to inspect the facilities. Students were directed to online classes during the thorough review.

Dozens of students, teachers, and administrative staff at UABC's Mexicali campus were told not to attend in-person classes after a bomb threat posted on social media the previous night.

The university stated that preventive actions began at 6:30 a.m. in coordination with state security authorities. "Following their recommendations, we have decided to take extreme precautions while a thorough review is carried out to ensure full safety," the institution shared.

Some students arrived at classrooms unaware of the alert and were sent back to take classes online. Inspections cover the Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Pedagogy and Educational Innovation, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Faculty of Languages, Faculty of Sports, and engineering labs.

Investigators are tracing the message's source, which alarmed the university community, their families, and nearby residents and businesses. UABC warned that any direct or indirect threat will result in institutional sanctions, including expulsion, and legal action with the Fiscalía General del Estado de Baja California (FGE BC), where a complaint will be filed.
