Bryan Kohberger files petition challenging Idaho murder conviction

Bryan Kohberger, who is serving four life sentences for the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, filed a petition for post-conviction relief on Monday. He is representing himself and claims he was misled into confessing.

Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to the stabbing deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves in Moscow, Idaho. He received the sentences without parole as part of a plea deal that avoided the death penalty.

Court records show the former criminal justice doctoral student submitted the petition Monday. In an interview with The New York Times, Kohberger said he was misled into confessing. CBS News has requested a copy of the filing.

The Goncalves family issued a statement condemning the petition. They said Kohberger received the deal he sought and never raised concerns during earlier proceedings.
