Member of DPR RI's Commission III, I Wayan Sudirta, described the death of student AT due to assault by a Brimob officer in Tual, Maluku, as a stain on the Polri institution. He urged a comprehensive evaluation of Polri's handling functions to prevent similar cases. Kapolri Listyo Sigit Prabowo has ordered a thorough investigation.
The death of a student identified only as AT in Tual, Maluku, due to alleged assault by a Brimob officer with initials MS, has drawn public attention. Member of DPR RI's Commission III, I Wayan Sudirta, stated that the incident further tarnishes the reputation of Polri, particularly Brimob. "The death of a student with initials AT in Tual, Maluku, once again stains the Polri institution," Wayan said in a written statement on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
Sudirta noted that cases of violence or violations by Polri personnel have occurred not only in Tual but also in Jakarta, West Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, Central Java, NTT, and other areas. Such cases are typically handled through two channels: criminal and ethical, with many Polri members facing criminal proceedings. "However, in several cases, especially those that emerge in public, the handling always uses two channels, namely criminal and ethical. Not a few Polri members then face criminal cases," he added.
Kapolri General Listyo Sigit Prabowo expressed anger and disappointment over the case. He instructed the Maluku Police Chief and the Propam Division to thoroughly investigate it under criminal law and ethical codes firmly. "The public is certainly still waiting for firm and concrete follow-up from Polri on this case," Sudirta said.
He emphasized the need for evaluation of policies and all Polri handling functions, especially those that could lead to repressive actions or abuse of authority. Polri reform, particularly cultural reform, is key to enhancing professionalism and accountability. Although Polri has optimized organizational restructuring and human resources, the repressive culture and lack of field supervision remain major challenges.
