Actor Jason Momoa has been cast in the lead role for the live-action Helldivers movie, produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. The film, directed by Justin Lin, is based on Arrowhead Game Studios' space shooter and is scheduled for release on November 10 next year. This casting adds to Momoa's growing portfolio of video game adaptations.
The announcement of Jason Momoa's involvement in the Helldivers adaptation comes via Deadline, highlighting his previous commitments to video game films including Minecraft and an upcoming Street Fighter project where he portrays Blanka, set for October 16 release. Momoa joins director Justin Lin, known for Fast and Furious entries, on the project centered around Arrowhead's chaotic space-based shooter.
The Helldivers film was first revealed in January 2025 alongside a Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation. Arrowhead's CEO Johan Pilestedt stated that the studio would contribute in a limited capacity. Lin's attachment was confirmed in December, despite his admission of not being a gamer, which he leveraged in his pitch to the team. Arrowhead expressed trust in Lin and discouraged suggestions that he play the game beforehand.
Details on Momoa's character remain undisclosed. In the interim, a fan-made Helldivers film by the YouTube channel Plot Coalition offers a nearly hour-long volunteer production, the longest such project to date.
