Massive fire destroys properties in Ruiru

A massive fire broke out in Ruiru's Biashara Ward on Sunday morning, destroying business properties. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion beforehand, suggesting a possible gas leak. Local leaders suspect it was a deliberate act to disrupt an upcoming public meeting.

On the morning of February 8, 2026, a massive fire erupted near the entrance to Ruiru's municipal offices, adjacent to the Ruiru Chief's offices in Biashara Ward. The blaze destroyed properties of unknown value, with photos and videos showing flames consuming iron-sheet structures owned by local businesspeople.

No casualties have been reported, and authorities are still assessing the damage extent and any injuries. At the time of publication, no emergency services were visible at the scene to assist.

Biashara Ward Member of County Assembly Kimani Nduta claimed the fire was a sinister plot by individuals aiming to disrupt a planned public participation meeting. The gathering was intended to discuss how businesspeople could safely vacate the area and whether they would receive compensation.

"We were to have a public participation meeting to see how people may vacate here and whether they may be compensated after they leave," Nduta said.

"We were really waiting for the meeting, but instead of a meeting we woke up to a fire, so I'm wondering what kind of coincidence is this, I have so many questions," he added.

This incident follows another major fire just days earlier at Golden Africa Ltd, an oil company along Mombasa Road on February 3, causing millions in losses. The Machakos County government confirmed it, with Governor Wavinya Ndeti stating the blaze was contained through a joint operation involving three agencies. Preliminary reports indicate that combustible oils and industrial activities fueled its rapid spread.
