Sahrai Milano has unveiled The Deeper Capsule Collection, a collaboration with Italian artist Lorena D'Ilio that reimagines rugs as narrative pieces addressing environmental themes. The collection features three hand-knotted rugs made from natural silk and New Zealand wool, drawing on the artist's research into ecological fragility. It is currently on display at the company's showroom in Milan.
Sahrai Milano, a company with over 190 years of craftsmanship, has partnered with artist Lorena D'Ilio to create The Deeper Capsule Collection. This series transforms traditional rugs into surfaces that convey stories of environmental vulnerability and shared responsibility. The works originate from D'Ilio's two decades of exploration, initially as collages using reclaimed fabrics and photography, now adapted into durable textiles through Sahrai's expertise.
The collection includes three pieces. The monumental rugs The Golden Jeans and No One's Land each measure 500 x 180 cm. The Golden Jeans tackles overconsumption and neglect, reworking a symbol of 1980s excess into a timeless object shaped by craftsmanship. No One's Land depicts ocean expanses outside national boundaries, using suspended images and vivid colors to highlight both allure and peril. The third rug, Dancing in the Ocean, spans 300 x 250 cm and offers an immersive experience, with textures mimicking sea depths to prompt thoughts on humanity's impact on the environment.
These rugs go beyond decoration, serving as heirlooms that oppose throwaway culture. The collaboration emphasizes craftsmanship as a means to sustain meaning, memory, and accountability. Visitors can view the collection at Sahrai Milano's showroom on Via Manzoni 45 in Milan, where it illustrates the blend of artistic vision and manufacturing tradition.
