CNJ hears five abuse complaints against Minas Gerais judge

The National Council of Justice has heard five complaints of alleged sexual abuses by Judge Magid Nauef Láuar from the Minas Gerais Court of Justice. The accusations emerged after his controversial ruling in a rape case. The judge stated he will not comment on the reports.

The National Council of Justice (CNJ) conducted virtual hearings with five individuals who reported alleged sexual abuses by Judge Magid Nauef Láuar of the Minas Gerais Court of Justice (TJMG). The complaints were initially filed by federal deputy Duda Salabert (PDT) and rose from two to five on Thursday (26).

The reports gained attention after Láuar voted to acquit a man convicted in the first instance of raping a 12-year-old girl. Two accusations appeared on social media posts: one from Saulo Láuar, the judge's cousin, who described an attempted abuse he suffered at age 14. "My body is tense, sore, and my throat is choked. Every detail of the incident has returned to its place, as if it happened yesterday," Saulo wrote on his profile. Another complaint came from a former court employee.

The CNJ's corregedoria has opened an inquiry into the judge's conduct. Meanwhile, on Wednesday (25), Láuar upheld a Public Prosecutor's appeal and reversed his prior ruling, suspending the acquittal decision. In the document, he expressed regret: "Unfortunately, it took a case under my rapporteurship to expose a recurrent understanding adopted by the Judiciary: disregarding social reality and advances in gender perspective theory".

Hours after the ruling, the accused was arrested. The case will go to the plenary of the 9th Criminal Chamber on Wednesday (4), where Judge Walner Barbosa Milward de Azevedo had sided with Láuar, while Kárin Emmerich dissented. Experts consulted indicate that Láuar's rulings may be at risk due to the unilateral annulment of a collective deliberation.
