Egypt plans investment fund to boost athletes' international performance

Egyptian officials are considering an investment fund to provide sustainable financing for sports talent. Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid met with Youth and Sports Minister Gohar Nabil to discuss using investment fund models to support and qualify promising athletes for regional and international competitions.

On Friday, the two ministers, Mohamed Farid and Gohar Nabil, discussed how investment fund models could create a professional environment in the sports sector while ensuring financial sustainability, according to a ministry statement. The proposed fund aims to build on government infrastructure developments completed over the past five years, serving as a financial support mechanism to sustain sports achievements through consistent funding, Farid said.

Youth and Sports Minister Gohar Nabil stated that the initiative aligns with directives from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to support youth and athletes, particularly in underprivileged governorates. He emphasized that the fund would focus on individual sports to help Egyptian athletes achieve results in international forums. Nabil added: "We are working with various state entities to maximize resources and open new horizons for sports investment," highlighting efforts to strengthen public-private partnerships and provide professional financing mechanisms that meet international standards.

The meeting was attended by Mahmoud Jibril, Assistant Chairman of the Financial Regulatory Authority, and Sally George, the FRA Chairman’s Assistant for Investment Funds, along with private sector representatives such as Ahmed Abou El-Saad, CEO of Azimut Egypt and head of asset management for the Middle East and North Africa, and Khalil El-Bawab, Head of Markets at Beltone. Also present were Mostafa Magdy, Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports for Strategic Affairs, and Abdullah El-Bahar, the Minister’s Assistant for Marketing and Investment, as well as other ministry officials. Nabil noted that the framework is designed to ensure equal opportunities and prepare a new generation of athletes capable of representing Egypt in continental and global championships.
