Study reveals anaemia affecting over half of Odisha's PVTG women

A Utkal University study released on July 20, 2026, shows that over 53% of adult women from Odisha's particularly vulnerable tribal groups suffer from anaemia. The research also highlights high rates of stunting among female adolescents and other nutritional challenges.

The interdisciplinary study surveyed 9,222 individuals from 2,041 households across 10 PVTG communities in districts including Malkangiri, Rayagada and Mayurbhanj. It found anaemia in 36.95% of adult males, with the highest rates among Mankidia men at 59.18% and Bonda men at 56.30%.

Female adolescent stunting reached 50.74% overall, peaking at 82.76% among the Hill Kharia. Researchers noted a 59% home-delivery rate and called for targeted nutrition programmes and culturally sensitive health interventions.

Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati released the report. Vice Chancellor Chandi Prasad Nanda described it as evidence-based research useful for policymakers. Coordinator Prasanna Kumar Patra stressed that basic maternal care remains inconsistent in these areas.
