Anthropic releases Opus 5 model with efficiency focus

Anthropic launched Opus 5 on July 24, positioning the new model as a cost-effective option close to its top-performing Fable 5 in key tasks. The release emphasizes coding improvements, autonomy, and reduced safeguards compared to prior flagship models.

Anthropic rolled out Opus 5 as an update to its Claude lineup. The model delivers performance near Fable 5 levels at half the price, with gains in coding, knowledge work, and scientific research such as organic chemistry and protein sequence analysis.

Users can adjust effort levels via a dial to balance thoroughness and speed. A research preview of fast mode offers 2.5 times faster output at twice the price of Opus 4. A fallback system switches to another model if safety filters block a prompt.

Pricing stays at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Opus 5 avoids the 30-day data retention policy applied to Fable and was not trained on advanced cybersecurity exploitation tasks.

Anthropic says the model shows the lowest rates of deceptive behavior among its releases and intervenes on restricted prompts 85 percent less often than Fable 5.

Cosa dice la gente

Users highlighted Opus 5's near-Fable 5 performance at half the cost and improved coding efficiency as major wins for developers. Some expressed skepticism about the rapid release pace and emphasized token optimization over raw capability gains. Benchmarks showed strong token efficiency and self-correction advantages.

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 on Tuesday as its first publicly available Mythos-class model. The release includes safeguards that route sensitive queries on cybersecurity, biology and chemistry to an earlier model. Subscribers can access it through June 22 before usage credits apply.

Anthropic will require usage-based payments from subscribers seeking access to its leading consumer AI model. The move complicates the longstanding free-or-subscription model for AI chatbots. It signals the potential end of simple monthly AI plans.

Anthropic has suspended all customer access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models to comply with a US government directive issued on June 12. The Commerce Department cited national security concerns tied to a potential jailbreak. Other Anthropic models remain available.

OpenAI has begun a limited preview of its GPT-5.6 model series for a small group of trusted partners. The rollout follows a request from the US administration. Broader availability is planned in the coming weeks.
