Gambonanza releases free demo ahead of Steam Next Fest

Indie developer Blukulélé has launched a free demo for Gambonanza, a turn-based chess roguelike, in anticipation of Steam Next Fest. The game reimagines traditional chess with smaller boards and over 150 rule-bending Gambits. Players can download the demo now on Steam to experience its strategic twists.

Gambonanza, developed by Blukulélé and co-published by Sidekick Publishing and Stray Fawn Publishing, introduces a fresh take on chess through roguelike mechanics. The free demo, released ahead of Steam Next Fest next week, allows players to explore its core features on Steam.

In Gambonanza, matches occur on smaller starting boards, creating high-stakes, fast-paced rounds. Unlike standard chess, where capturing the king ends the game, players must clear every piece from the board to win. This is achieved by combining chess pieces with over 150 unique Gambits, which unlock combos and strategic surprises. A dynamic reserve system lets players store extra pieces off-board and deploy them strategically, while board upgrades such as golden squares and blessing tiles enhance tactics.

The game features vibrant pixel art with a nostalgic CRT filter, evoking a quirky fairground ambiance. Additional mini-games inspired by pachinko, slot machines, and Gachapon offer upgrades that can alter gameplay. These elements turn chess into a snackable strategy adventure, emphasizing synergies and rule-breaking over traditional play.

The demo provides a taste of these mechanics, with plans for a full mobile and PC release later this year. As one source notes, Gambonanza 'twists the familiar rules into a strategy sandbox that just happens to use chess pieces as its language.'
