Joe Rohde's upcoming book, Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible, has quickly reached the top of several Amazon best-seller categories during its pre-order period. Its success reflects strong interest from Disney fans and broader audiences interested in creativity and design.

Joe Rohde, recognized as a Disney Legend in 2024, has seen his new book, Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible, climb to the number one spot in multiple Amazon best-seller lists shortly after pre-orders became available. According to Amazon rankings, the book leads in Travel & Explorer Biographies, the Entertainment Industry, and Popular Psychology, Creativity & Genius categories. It is also approaching the top 100 overall books on the platform.

Published by Penguin Random House, the illustrated book draws from Rohde's extensive career as a Walt Disney Imagineer. Rohde described it as “full of stories of adventure, design, creativity, and autobiographical vignettes (when relevant),” serving as a journey through key ideas for fostering group creativity. While many stories relate to his Disney projects, the content extends to explorations in the Himalayas and Mongolia, work with other organizations, and reflections on the art of science and the science of art.

Rohde's notable contributions include leading the design of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which opened in 1998 with an emphasis on cultural authenticity and conservation. He also spearheaded Pandora: The World of Avatar, opened in 2017, where the book's title references the land's iconic floating mountains created through innovative rockwork and landscaping. Additional projects encompass Disney’s Aulani resort in Hawaii and contributions to Tokyo DisneySea.

Post-retirement, Rohde joined Virgin Galactic as Experience Architect, applying theme park design skills to space tourism. The book uses these experiences as case studies to explore collaboration, innovation, and balancing original ideas with improvisation, appealing beyond Disney enthusiasts to those interested in design thinking and creative leadership.

Pre-orders are available through the Disney Books website, highlighting the anticipation for insights into Rohde's creative process and the challenges of large-scale projects.
