Magistrate suspended over alleged bribe to influence sentence in Kangema

Two officers at the Kangema court in Murang’a County were arrested by EACC on allegations of receiving a bribe from a convicted businessman to secure a lenient sentence. Chief Justice Martha Koome announced the suspension of the magistrate.

The two were arrested on Tuesday in Kangema while allegedly receiving 150,000 shillings from a businessman convicted on July 2, 2026 of obtaining money by false pretenses.

EACC Central Region Director Japheth Baithalu said a probation officer allegedly demanded 170,000 shillings from the businessman for a favorable report to avoid jail time.

EACC set a trap that led to the arrests in a Kangema restaurant.

The Chief Justice said the judiciary cannot tolerate corruption and that the Judicial Service Commission has begun disciplinary proceedings against the officer.
