President William Ruto announced that Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group will soon set up offices in Nairobi following a meeting with the head of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
The announcement came on Tuesday after Ruto met Victoria Oakley, chief executive of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The three companies' decision marks the first step toward making Nairobi a hub for the recorded music industry.
Ruto said the move reflects confidence in Kenya's creative talent and ongoing reforms. He added that the companies have agreed to establish a presence in the capital to support artists, producers, publishers and investors.
The next phase will focus on implementation to create jobs and export opportunities for Kenyan creatives, Ruto stated. Nairobi already hosts a growing music scene across multiple genres.
