Over 1.5 million cattle vaccinated against foot and mouth disease in KwaZulu-Natal

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has vaccinated more than 1.5 million cattle against foot and mouth disease since February.

The campaign began after a severe outbreak hit dairy farmers and smallholders in the Ugu, Harry Gwala and Amajuba districts. Authorities introduced livestock movement restrictions to limit spread and protect trade and food supplies.

MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development Thembeni Mthethwa-Madlopha said the department had already exceeded its target. She noted two vaccination teams were active and planned to finish work in the iLembe and King Cetshwayo districts by 5 August before moving to Umzinyathi and Amajuba.

In May the province completed vaccination of its entire dairy herd with help from private veterinarians.
