AEMET warns of temperature rise that may form third heatwave

Spain will face a temperature increase starting this weekend that could extend into next week. The State Meteorological Agency has issued a note for a very high and persistent heat episode, though uncertainty remains over whether it will be declared a heatwave.

AEMET indicates that heat will start rising in the south of the peninsula and the valleys of the main rivers from Saturday. The rise will continue on Sunday and will generalize on Monday across peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands.

The agency notes that this episode could start between Monday or Tuesday and end on Thursday or Friday. For it to be considered a heatwave it must last at least three consecutive days with highs above the 95th percentile in 10 percent of the reference stations.

It would be the third of this summer after those at the end of June and the beginning of July. AEMET recalls that climate change is increasing the number and intensity of these episodes.
