British Council launches Study UK campaign in Jakarta MRT

The British Council has launched its global education campaign Study UK in Jakarta's MRT since February 23 until the end of March 2026, offering an interactive experience via mysterious QR codes that unlock information about studying in the UK. The initiative targets urban youth by linking their daily commutes to international education opportunities. The inspirational story of MRT driver Amelia Khairani Sutrisno, who recently graduated with an MSc from the UK, is highlighted in the campaign.

The Study UK campaign by the British Council brings a 'full-train experience' to Jakarta's MRT, designed to accompany the daily journeys of urban youth while introducing the quality of education in the UK. The event runs from February 23 to the end of March 2026, utilizing a major transportation corridor in Jakarta to target city dwellers who frequently use public transport.

The campaign's approach connects Jakarta's commuting culture with that of major cities like London. Passengers can interact via QR codes inside the trains, linking directly to the digital Study UK platform. This platform provides information on UK universities, study program options, application processes, and scholarship opportunities.

The British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, Dominic Jermey, stated on March 10, 2026, “Being in the MRT reminds us of the importance of connections in everyday life. Education works in a similar way, connecting people, ideas, and opportunities across borders.”

British Council Country Director for Indonesia and Southeast Asia, Summer Xia, added, “By bringing this experience to the MRT—a public space familiar to many young people—we hope to open insights into global opportunities while providing easier access to trusted information about studying in the UK.”

The campaign also highlights the story of Amelia Khairani Sutrisno, an MRT Jakarta driver who completed her MSc in Railway Systems Engineering and Integration at the University of Birmingham in December 2025, supported by an LPDP scholarship from the Indonesian government. Amelia operated the train in the presence of Jermey and Xia during the event. She said, “Studying Railway Systems Engineering and Integration in the UK gave me a deeper understanding of how rail networks are designed and managed. I am proud to bring that knowledge back to Indonesia and apply it in my work at MRT Jakarta.”

The initiative does not promote any specific institution but offers practical guidance for prospective students and families to understand study options in the UK.
