Contagious cancer identified in North American catfish

Scientists have identified the first known cancer that can be transmitted among freshwater fish. The discovery involves catfish in a lake spanning the US and Canada.

The finding adds catfish to a short list of animals where cancer cells can spread directly from one individual to another. Previously documented cases include dogs, Tasmanian devils, and certain mollusks.

In humans and most animals, cancer does not pass between individuals. The new case shows that nature can produce exceptions where malignant cells survive transmission and grow in a new host.

Researchers described the phenomenon as rare but now confirmed in an additional species. The study focused on fish populations in the shared lake region.

A genetic analysis of 493 tumors from domestic cats collected across five countries found that feline cancers share many of the same cancer-driving genes seen in people and dogs, including frequent FBXW7 mutations in feline mammary tumors that are linked to poorer outcomes in some human breast cancers. The results were published in Science.

A bacterium isolated from Japanese tree frogs completely removed colorectal tumors in mice after one intravenous treatment. Researchers at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology found the strain, Ewingella americana, attacked cancer cells directly while also triggering an immune response. The results were published in the journal Gut Microbes in 2025.

Hunter-gatherers in Norway transported brown trout to an isolated mountain lake at least 7000 years ago to secure a reliable food source during summer trips. The finding represents the oldest known case of humans moving fish between bodies of water.
