Louisiana woman accused of abandoning 8-year-old son multiple times

A 43-year-old woman in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, faces charges of cruelty to juveniles and child desertion after allegedly attempting to leave her 8-year-old son at a cemetery, farm, and laundromat. Police responded to the latest incident at a local laundromat on Sunday afternoon, where witnesses reported seeing the mother drive away without the boy. The child was taken to the police station and is reported to be doing fine.

On Sunday around 2 p.m., officers from the Ponchatoula Police Department responded to reports of an abandoned child at a local laundromat. Witnesses observed a woman driving off, leaving her 8-year-old son behind. The boy was brought to the police station for safety while authorities searched for his mother, Jeanette Edmonds, 43.

While at the station, police provided the child with McDonald's and cartoons to keep him occupied. Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson described the efforts, stating, "We had him here for quite some time, so we went and got him some McDonald's and put on some cartoons for him."

Edmonds was eventually located about 60 miles away in Harvey, across the Mississippi River from New Orleans, and taken into custody. Investigation revealed this was not her first attempt to leave the boy alone. Previously, she tried to abandon him at a cemetery, but he managed to return to the car. She then attempted to drop him off at a nearby farm.

The motive remains unclear, with police noting it could stem from punishment, frustration, or another factor. Chief Layrisson added, "She never acknowledged any reason for why she abandoned the child, and at no time did she ask the detectives if her son was okay."

Edmonds is currently held at the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office without bond. The boy is reported to be in good condition following the incidents.
