National court annuls ana duato acquittal and orders retrial

The appeals chamber of the national court has annulled the acquittal of ana duato and her husband for tax fraud in the nummaria case and ordered a retrial before a different panel.

The ruling upholds the state attorney's appeal against the verdict that cleared the actress and producer miguel ángel bernardeau of tax offences linked to personal income tax for the 2010 to 2012 tax years.

Duato issued a statement defending her innocence and stating that she paid all her taxes without intent to defraud. The actress claims that the tax agency uses public figures to set examples and announced she will defend herself again at the new trial.

The chamber also reduced tax adviser fernando peña's sentence to 78 years in prison after ruling one offence time-barred. Acquittals for the 2014 to 2017 tax years remain in place as they were not appealed by prosecutors.
