Retro Designs reveals modified 1969 Mercedes 280 SE coupe

Retro Designs, a North Carolina-based firm specializing in classic car restorations, has unveiled a reimagined 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupe for its 15th anniversary. The project features a powerful engine swap and modern upgrades while preserving the vehicle's original aesthetic. This restomod combines vintage design with contemporary performance.

Retro Designs, located in Harrisburg, North Carolina, focuses on reviving iconic automobiles through modern engineering and subtle styling enhancements. The company, which primarily works on classic Corvettes, American trucks, and European models, marked its 15th anniversary with a comprehensive overhaul of a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupe from the W111 generation, a precursor to the S-Class.

At the heart of the build is a hand-built, naturally aspirated 5.4-liter M113 V8 engine sourced from a 2006 Mercedes C55 AMG. This engine, originally producing up to 362 horsepower, has been upgraded to deliver approximately 640 horsepower—four times the output of the coupe's stock 2.8-liter inline-six, which made 160 horsepower. Modifications include a custom wiring harness and sealed electrical system from Modern Racing, aftermarket ECU integration, a stainless steel fuel system with a custom tank by Rick’s Tanks, a Ron Davis aluminum radiator, and a Kooks stainless steel exhaust system.

Power is transmitted via a Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic (722.6) five-speed automatic gearbox, originally used in early 2000s AMG models and managed by Sound German Automotive. The transmission integrates seamlessly without altering the chassis tunnel. The bespoke chassis incorporates a reworked suspension and an advanced braking setup with an electronic brake booster and E-Stopp electronic parking brake.

Exterior updates are minimal to maintain the timeless look: the sunroof was removed, the body painted in Axalta Chromax XP Irish Green, LED lighting added, and custom billet wheels by Evod Industries fitted, inspired by the original steel wheels. Brightwork was refinished by Advanced Plating.

Inside, enhancements blend classic and modern elements, such as custom door panels with integrated accent lighting, restored and heated front and rear seats with custom stitching, a full carpet kit, restored wood trim and chrome, an Alcantara headliner, keyless entry, and an audio system with Audison amplifier and Focal speakers. Dakota Digital gauges and a Vintage Air HVAC system complete the interior, integrated with the original dashboard.

The restoration demanded thousands of hours from a team of technicians, refining every detail for a balance of heritage and performance. No specific performance figures beyond horsepower were disclosed.
